Kasos is an island municipality in the Dodecanese chain of islands in Greece. It is the southernmost island in the Aegean Sea, and is part of the Karpathos regional unit.
Isolated Kasos battered by severe winds and imprisoned by huge turqoise waters looks like forgotten by time. Most of its visitors are rare seabirds as more of the human returnees are Kasiots on fleeting visits, having left in droves years ago to seek employment. When someone visits Kasos faces a special charm to the Dodecanese’ southernmost island.
Kasos’s capital and port is called Fry the commercial and administrative center of the island.In Fry pretty white houses, with typical navy blue doors and window frames are lining the harbour. In the capital there are enough cafe shops for relaxation with the view of barnacled fishermen fiddle with their orange nets on the impossibly photogenic quay of Bouka.
Tiny Emborio is a satellite port of Fry used for pleasure craft and fishing boats. With a sandy beach and clear water, it’s the nearest place to Fry for a quick dip. The island’s best beach is the isolated pebbled cove of Helatros, near Moni Agiou Georgiou Hadion, 11 kilometres southwest of Fry along a paved road. Avlaki is another decent yet small beach here, reached along a track from the monastery. None of Kasos’ beaches offer shade.
Kasos is about 7 miles far from Arkassa, a village in the west side of Karpathos and in the northwest side of Kasos, Armathia lies, an uninhabited island that belongs to Kasos. Armathia has a great history and an absolutely worth while visiting beach of Maramara , one of the most beautiful Mediterranean beaches. The territory of the Amathus is rich in top quality plaster.
Since the 19th century the mining and extraction of plaster contributed to the development of Armathia, where 8,000 tons per year were transferred to Odessa, Constantinople, Smyrna, Alexandria and Piraeus. There are several islets around the island belonging to Kasos some of them are Karofulla, Kourika, Litra, Plati, Pontikonisia, Porionisi and Stroggili.
Kasos has a total area of about 70 square kilometres. The population of the island is according to the last census is about 1000 inhabitants. Kasos lies in the most southern side of Aegean Sea very near to Crete and the exact geographical coordinates are 35°24’14.0″N 26°55’32.6″E in the Aegean Sea.
